Sydney: from spectacular to uninhabitable

Scorched by temperatures five degrees higher than today, lacking drinking water and yet battered by rising seas and ravaged by bush fires of the ferocity that last month blackened huge areas of Victoria and Tasmania, one of the world's most spectacular cities could be virtually uninhabitable.

First off, thanks to my friend Nishant for brining this to my attention. Now, this is intriguing for two reasons…

1) Australia is in real trouble. As reports from the
New South Wales government and the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) say, Australia is running low on drinkable water while the ocean-water level is rising to dangerous levels. Combine those with the worst draught in “living memory” and you have real trouble.

2) Australia AND the U.S. have both refused to sign the
Kyoto protocol. I bring this up not for the fact that both countries are not meeting certain environmental-sustaining requirements but that both countries have had the same mindset when it comes to global warming up to this point – they have chosen to not acknowledge it exist. I am glad the acknowledgment is happening now, in both countries, but unfortunately for Australia, it may be too late. So again, as Americans, we have a choice to make when it comes to how we are going to fight and survive the environmental effects of our own doing. Innovate or let other innovate for us.
