Gore: Nobel win a chance 'to change the way people think'

Summary: Al Gore, just hours after hearing he would share the Nobel Peace Prize with the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change , spoke to reporters in Palo Alto, California about the urgency of the climate crisis. Gore stated, “This is a chance to elevate global consciousness about the challenges that we face now. It truly is a planetary emergency, and we have to respond quickly.” He went on to add that he will donate half of the $1.5 million prize money to the Alliance for Climate Protection, an organization he founded. The article goes on to mention both President Bush and former President Clinton offered their congratulations to Gore.

My Take: This is pretty much what I’d expect to hear from Gore after winning. For him, it is not about the awards and his main concern is still raising awareness that leads to action. Something interesting this article did not cover was Gore’s final comment and exit; he ended by saying “I’m going back to work now. This is just the beginning,” and left without answering any questions from the 70 journalist. Apparently, he was scheduled to attend a meeting with Silicon Valley innovators to discuss the clean technology industry. Now, that is what I like to see. Times like these, when you are at the top of your game, are just opportunities to work harder and accomplish more than you ever thought possible.
