Summary: Cited for “their efforts to build up and disseminate knowledge about man-made climate change”, Al Gore and the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Award. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said its aim was to bring attention to the “increased danger of violent conflicts and war, within and between states” posed by global warming. Mr. Gore, the former Vice-President, emerged as a leading climate change campaigner in 2006 with his documentary, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’. The IPCC, established in 1988, is tasked with providing policymakers with neutral summaries of the latest expertise on climate change.
My Take: Great news! Not that there are any winners or losers when it comes to the Nobel awards, especially for Peace, but what an honor and what a statement about the impact of Global Warming. I wasn’t surprised by this but it was great to wake up and read about. This certainly raises awareness even further but the thing to keep in mind is that neither Gore or the IPCC have remedied global warming – that job is still up to the rest of us.
